AWS Lowest Latency Region

Find the AWS region with the lowest latency to your IP address, according to Route 53.

According to Route 53, the AWS region with the lowest latency to you is

Excludes China and GovCloud (US) regions.

EMEA only

Americas only

Asia-Pacific only

Region x is closer to me, but this says otherwise. How come?

Route 53 returns the region with the lowest latency to your IP address, which whilst likely to be your physically closest region, is not necessarily the case. Depending on the route taken from your IP address to AWS, it's possible that you may have lower latency to a region slightly further away. Second, it seems that Route 53 doesn't always get it perfectly right. AWS don't disclose exactly how they determine to which region you have the lowest latency. Sometime, when regions are clustered relatively close to each other (eu-west-1, eu-west-2 & eu-west-3 for example), Route 53 regularly changes its mind as to which has the lowest latency from a given IP address.
